---The Plague
of the Procrastinating Perfectionist
OK, Mr. After 50 Online Marketing Guru...
Where's my ezine you promised?!
That's probably what some of you are thinking...
I launched this project on March 18...
-
Brainstormed the idea
-
Registered the domain
-
Built the one-page website
-
Set up the autoresponder
-
Began promoting the idea
-
Promised a powerful ezine
All of this, and within 48 hours the site
was active online.
OK, where is the ezine? It's getting
close to two weeks,
and no first issue.
I wanted this to be a knock-your-socks-off,
blow-em-out-of-
the-water, dyn-o-mite first issue.
So I have been thinking
and researching, and thinking and researching
some more...
Finally, I decided, "Hey, Jack! Do
it and do it now!"
"Ready, Fire, Aim!"
Write something. Get going in some
direction. Choose your
topic. You can always make course corrections
along the way.
See, it was happening again. The
Plague of Procrastinating
Perfectionism.
Perhaps some of you know what I am talking
about...
Procrastination and Perfectionism are
killers when it
comes to getting anything done.
They will deliver a death-blow
to your next money-making idea if you
don't guard yourself from
their influences.
Perfectionism is a limiting belief
that you must get every
part and parcel just right. It will
keep you struggling to
get that last little piece tweaked just
so-so. It can often
cause you to trash a whole project because
you can't get it
just right. You never complete a
project because you never
get it perfect.
Well, I have finally--it has taken a very
long time--come to
the conclusion that I am not perfect,
nor will I ever be.
So anything that I do, or create, is not
going to be perfect
either. Chances are you are not
perfect. I'll give you the
benefit of the doubt, but please don't
continue tweaking and
fine tuning your money-making idea until
the cows come home.
Get it out there. Let someone else
take a look at it. Test
the market. See if anyone else likes
your idea as much as
you do.
Don't procrastinate. Get busy.
If you think you don't have
time to work on your project, then you
have some choices to
make. What are you willing to give
up to open up time to be
devoted to your money-making project?
Most folks watch too much TV. I don't really
watch that much
TV myself--when you have worked in it
for 30 years, you lose
the desire to be a slave to it at home,
too.
But I will admit to watching some of the
NCAA play-offs this
past week. Kentucky was doing great
until the game with the
Marquette team Saturday afternoon...now
that we are out of
the running, I guess I can get back to
working on some of my
own money-making projects.
So check yourself on your TV time. Check
every area of your
life and make sure it is all necessary.
If you seem to have no spare time, then maybe you can recover some time
by being better organized. If nothing else, you may have to get up
an hour early and spend that time working on your projects.
Just how serious are you about having
an online business?
How much money do you want to make each
week? each month?
Write it down.
"I want to make $XXXX each week."
"I can devote XX hours each week to my
project/business."
"I have a budget of $XXX/month that I can
commit to building
my business."
Are you serious about business, or do you
have an expensive
hobby?
Think about it. Be honest.
Then act accordingly.
It's OK to have an expensive hobby...just
don't kid yourself
about being able to quit your day job,
if you are not going
to make the commitment it takes to turn
your hobby into a
business.
The internet offers one of the greatest
opportunities to
men and women of today to make a break
from the corporate
hustle and bustle that dominates most
peoples' lives.
It will involve lots of work initially.
It takes some time.
It takes some money. It will not
happen overnight.
All of the big names on the internet
that are making the big
bucks have taken many months and usually
several years to
"arrive". Most were successful direct
marketers off-line
before they "made it" online.
So swallow a dose of reality. This
is NOT a get-rich-quick
scheme...That is a hard pill to
get down for some folks.
If you want to get rich by the end of next
week, it ain't
happenin'. Find yourself another
guru.
Which brings up another point. What's
a guru? Some eastern
religion psychic hypnotic manipulator?
Not on the internet.
Although some of the internet gurus write
some very hypnotic
sales letters, most would rather be considered
to be coaches
or consultants.
So when you see "The After 50 Online Marketing
Guru", think:
"The Experienced, Online Marketing Coach".
Thank you for subscribing to this ezine.
My friend, Ann,
suggested that I might not get too many
subscribers to an
"After 50" ezine...she felt 30, and holding,
was a good age.
I'm not checking anyone's ID. If
you have joined the rest
of us "seasoned" citizens but you don't
actually qualify for
the "after 50" group, welcome anyway.
I'm glad to have you
as a member of our royal community.
I want to say a special welcome to Gordon.
And to Julie.
Both have been an encouragement to me
during my time
on the internet.
Also I'd like to welcome members from the
AARP community.
I look forward to getting to know all
of you.
By sharing with me your dreams and goals,
we can work together to build on those dreams and accomplish those goals.

Thursday, March 27, my site was off-line
due to an "attack"
on a server that I use for part of my
web business. Seems
someone hacked into an Aljazeera domain
and changed the
DNS. It caused a major meltdown
on the server that holds my ezine domain. Things were back to normal(?)
by Friday
morning.
What do I mean by an attack on a server?
What's a server?
What's a domain? Who is DNS?
I'll answer these questions
and a few more in the next issue of "MMOafter50"
ezine.
Til the next time,
Be blessed,
John David Bradshaw
